Traffic generation is one of the most important things to do if you are having a blog or a website because your site may not be successful without visitors.
Needless to mention that we all are here to make our blogs successful, right?
Thus, we need a good amount of traffic to our blogs to make them successful.
In this blog post, I am going to share some of best strategies to generate traffic to your blog based on my experience and research.
There are five different sources of Traffic:
- Organic Traffic: Traffic that comes from Search engines.
- Direct Traffic: Traffic that comes when someone types your blog’s address in the browser’s address bar.
- Referral Traffic: Traffic that comes from some different websites.
- Paid Traffic: Traffic that comes from the ad campaigns. Example: PPC campaigns, banner ads, Facebook ads, etc.
- Email Traffic: Traffic that comes from the emails you send to your audience in the form of newsletters.
Now let’s discuss how to generate traffic using these sources.
1. How to generate Organic Traffic to your blog?
Organic traffic is what gives you the best ROI from your blog, and this is the reason Search Engine Optimization was evolved that includes the strategies to optimize a site as per the search engine’s guidelines.

So, when you talk about generating organic traffic, you have to do the SEO for your blog. It is done in two phase, the first phase is the On-page optimization, and the second phase is Off-page optimization.
On-page optimization includes:
- Keyword Research and distribution on the site.
- Writing Meta Tags.
- URL Optimization.
- Heading tag optimization.
- Content Optimization.
- Image optimization.
- Optimizing the blog’s loading speed.
- Making the blog mobile friendly.
Off page optimization includes Link building primarily which can be done by:
- Guest blogging.
- Infographic submissions.
- Submitting blogs in quality blog directories.
There are many backlink building strategies are there that you can read on Brian Dean’s blog by clicking here.
So if you implement the best SEO strategies on your blog, you will be able to generate a good amount of organic traffic gradually. These all strategies are done to rank the blog for some good keywords because if your blog gets the top ranking with some very nice keyword, then you can get immense traffic on your blog.
2. How to generate Direct Traffic to your blog?
When someone types your blog’s URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in the browser’s address bar, then that traffic counts as Direct Traffic.
To increase direct traffic, you need to build a good brand for your blog. Once you have established a solid brand, you will notice more direct traffic to your blog.
To brand your blog you may do these:
- Have a short domain name.
- Have a professional design for your blog.
- Have a professional Looking Logo.
- Create authoritative content on your blog.
- Offer some freebies on your blog time to time.
- Write e-books, and give them away for free to your audience.
You will notice that gradually there are more people coming to your blog directly.
For example, Amazon.com has a strong brand, that everyone goes to it directly rather than finding it on search engines. The brand is so strong that everyone remembers its name.

Traffic that comes from any other websites is known as referral traffic. This traffic source is very important to build your blog’s credibility because, in most cases, you get targeted audience through it. There are a few good strategies that you can put into action to generate a lot of referral traffic. Here are they:
(i) Blog commenting: Ah! This is the most favorite things of mine in the blogging. Since I have started blogging, I have been reading so many blogs, and commenting on them.
I read around five blog posts a day and share my thoughts & views on them in the form of comments. I wasn’t aware that it will generate traffic as well because I was too new to understand these things. One day I was checking my blog’s traffic stats and surprised to see that my blog has got most of the traffic from the blogs where I have posted the comments. So commenting can bring you a lot of referral traffic.
(ii) Blog Communities: This is something I have come to know after reading a few articles. Blog communities like Kingged, klinkk, bizsugar are the best places to submit your blog post. The more votes you will receive, the more traffic to your site will be generated. You need to remember one thing that don’t just submit your posts rather do some activities as well by voting and commenting on others’ blog posts as well. Because communities work on an exchange basis, if you do for others, they will do for you.
(iii) Social Media: Social Media sites are good places to promote your blog posts. You can also ask your friend friends to like, and share your posts on their social profiles. This works well!
Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest are the best social sites to generate traffic. Share your blog posts on these sites only if the people on your friend list are interested in them. If they are not interested in the stuff you blog about, then sharing with them won’t be a good idea because they will feel spammed.
It’s a good idea to promote your content where there is an enormous number of targeted audience hang out, and they love to share your content.
(iv) Guest blogging: Though as per Google’s Matt Cutts, doing guest blogging for SEO is unethical, it is still one of the nicest ways to build relationships, brand yourself, and generate huge amount of referral traffic to your blog.
Remember one thing that you should do guest posts on the blogs in your niche and the ones that have some established credibility online.
4. How to generate Paid Traffic to your blog?
I won’t recommend generating paid traffic for the blog unless it is required because paid traffic is what you get till you pay. Once you stop paying, you will stop receiving the traffic.
Paid traffic is best for product and service based websites because it helps increase the number of sales.
For the blog, it is not that important. Though at any point if you want to do it, then Google Adwords and Facebook Ads are the best ad programs.
5. How to generate Email Traffic to your blog?
Email traffic is the most important and reliable traffic to a blog because even when Google stops loving your site, and you lose organic traffic at some point of time, it will be there forever unless you stop sending the newsletters.

To generate good amount email traffic, you must need a huge number of subscribers, and to increase the subscriber count, you can offer some free e-books or something interesting to your blog visitors.
For example, you may put a signup page and write something like “Signup to my formula of increasing 110% organic traffic within two months”. So, whenever someone signs up for the newsletter, he gets the access to that book for free. This way, you will be able to increase the number of relevant subscribers gradually.
Just look at the below screenshot of Backlinko.com’s newsletter signup form:
Isn’t it looking impressive? As it offers to learn to get more traffic with exclusive tips and insights, it can tempt them to sign up who wants more traffic.
So you can do something of this sort to increase subscribers.
